Special features of the profession

Dr. Denis Slinkin

Dr. Denis Slinkin states that the specialty “traumatology and orthopedics” was formed of two separate clinical specialties that study diseases and injuries of the human musculoskeletal system.Traumatology – the field of clinical medicine, studying damages of the musculoskeletal system (sprains, sprains, fractures, fractures and dislocations), developing methods of their diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

Orthopaedics is a field of clinical medicine that studies congenital and acquired diseases and deformities of the human musculoskeletal system and develops methods for their diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

In other words, traumatology is an urgent measure, orthopaedics is a planned treatment. But together they are engaged in a common cause. That is why the university of the future specialist is teaching both sides of the specialty: traumatology and orthopedics.

Traumatology and orthopaedics are closely connected with neurosurgery, more precisely – with neurotraumatology, which treats craniocerebral and spinal cord injuries.

For example, a neurotraumatologist is needed to detect and remove a hematoma in the brain after a head injury or to repair a depressed shattered skull fracture. He also performs surgeries to correct skull defects, to stabilize the injured spine, so says Dr. Denis Slinkin.

Traumatology is the oldest section of medicine. Archaeologists have found signs of concomitant fractures in ancient Egyptian mummies and remains of ancient Roman warriors. It is known that the ancient Incas successfully treated wounds and fractures, applying the “tires” of the feathers of large birds, were able to amputate limbs and even performed operations on the skull.
